Mmm, the tastey sour gummy worms!  My favorite are the pink and blue ones, except sometimes there are weird batches of worms where they aren’t the strawberry and blue raspberry flavor but some crazy watermelon and blue mystery.  It makes me sad when they fool my tastebuds…

Anyways, this clever picture of chromosome gummy worms is by artist Kevin Van Aelst.  His work is simple but filled with science bits that I forgot about in high school.

NASA created a fun artwork of their own. They layered 53 separate images that were taken by the Galileo spacecraft in 1992 of our own orbiting block of rock. They claim they were examining the composition of its surface but I think they just wanted an excuse for making the moon look like it got trapped in the 70s. Each color signifies a different typographical feature. The “blue to orange colors indicate volcanic lava flows”. More like the blue tastes like raspberry, the pinks and red are cherry/watermelon, and the greens are apple flavored.

When you mix all the colors in a paint box you get a “lovely” brownish-grayish color….when you mix bits of rocks and minerals you get sand color. Each entity of sand is a beautiful palette. The chemical composition in each rock tells the story of where the sand is found and what types of environmental factors contribute to its composition. Even though the colors in each sample of sand from various places around the world are beautiful, they are not reliable in deciphering what type of stone it is. In many tropical areas, the sand is a mixture of volcanic rock and marine life remains. If the sand is mostly composed of marine remains it is called biogenic sand.

The Virgin Mary blue is supposed to be identical to the lapis lazuli pigment that used to be used in tempera paint.  It definitely is a very spiritual blue invoking some sense of divine hierarchy.  Funny, it never occurred to me till now to ask why she is commonly depicted in blue garments.  I attended a non-denominational Christian middle school and in 8th grade I was chosen to play Mary in the Christmas nativity scene.  My mother chose the perfect shade of blue but I did not question why I had to wear this color rather than red or gold.  Being covered from head to toe with such a deep shade of blue made me feel….different.  Maybe it was the fact that I was on a stage and my character is the mother of Jesus… Whatever the reason there is still a strange feeling when totally draped with such a luscious color.  I wonder if Mary actually owned any blue clothing?

This picture actually looks tastey even though it is poop.  Speaking of poop, there are are so many colors it can have.  There’s not just chocolate brown, but there is dark almost black brown, and it can event become shades of olive green.  And if you eat lots of Fruit Loops it comes out rainbow!  And when you eat corn there is yellow in it!  There is a museum in Japan that shows different types of animal poop.  The animals range from domestic cats to wild African animals.  The feces are displayed in colorful paper boxes, ready to be presented as a present.

It’s bright, it’s yellow, it tastes like lemon or pineapple. It’s yellow hard candy!! Sweet, sour, yummy, gross, crunchy, hard, sticky, see-through. Yellow starburst though, not so good…..
